MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA – This is 19-year-old Sagar Dhurve who became partially handicapped, unable to use his left arm at all. One day, while Sagar was asleep, his younger brother spilled kerosene on his arm and it caught fire. With no medical facilities available in his area, Sagar was given home remedies which worsened his condition. About four years ago, with high hopes, his family scrounged up just enough money for a corrective surgery. Unfortunately, it failed. To make matters worse, three months ago, Sagar’s father passed away leaving the burden of earning a living to Sagar, the eldest son.
Losing hope of normalcy
“My family could not afford my treatment anymore, and with the heart-breaking loss of my father I was left with this heavy responsibility,” said Sagar remembering the hopeless feeling. Despite his condition, he diligently tried to earn as a daily wage worker. The burn contracture in his left elbow and underarm restricted him, causing major hindrances at work.
